Trends in artificial intelligence and machine learning have made metadata, data governance and data quality more relevant than ever. However, despite these advancements, organisational approaches remain focused on central data teams, rather than distributing data governance and metadata management across the organisation. Because of this existing methods for measuring data governance maturity focus on getting data governance teams to assess their perception of organisational maturity, which fails to capture an understanding of data activities from end-users.
Through experience with data management and data governance projects, we have developed the MAST/IDEAL Methodology, that describes 4 core beliefs (Metadata Analysis, Standards and Teamwork) and 5 core activities (Inventory-Document-Endorse-Audit-Leadership) for dynamic data governance. Aligned with the DAMA DM-BOK, these activities are described in clear, common steps to assist new and emerging data practioners engged with expert data practioners. This process is openning the data govenance industry to diverse and underrepresented areas by helping them engage faster with clear steps to improve processes.
In this presentation we present the MAST Data Governance Maturity Toolkit, a toolkit that uses the MAST/IDEAL Methodology as a framework for understanding beliefs and behaviours of data governance from an end-user perspective. This Toolkit provides an “on-the-ground” understanding of how organisations approach data governance activities from a business-as-usual perspective.
Co-developed by Aristotle Metadata with partners from the healthcare and government sector, this Toolkit uses simple language to bridge the gap between data governance experts and business areas. By gathering data from business areas and end-users, we show how aggregate data can be used to assess the organisation and present next step activities for data governance improvement.
